The Heimlich Can Save your Pet’s Life

April is Pet First Aid Awareness Month — a month dedicated to raising awareness about keeping our fur kids safe. (Downloadable my FREE Poster Set, “How to Save a Choking Pet” here: Free Red and Howling Posters)

Because choking cuts off oxygen to the brain, you only have a few minutes to save a life. If your pet is choking, most likely, there won’t be time to drive to the vet. Taking a few minutes to watch this video could save your pet’s life!

PLEASE SHARE this video with friends and family who have pets, as well as with pet sitters and anyone else with pets in their lives. Pets can choke on everything from toys to rawhide to string, and the consequences can be deadly. Choking occurs when a foreign object lodges in the throat or windpipe, blocking the flow of air. In this video, I’ve not only put together step-by-step instructions on how to save a choking pet, but I’ve also included common choking hazards, things to watch out for, and helpful tips to help keep your pets safe! xoAmy

  1. Our second dog was eating, got alarmed and came running and barking and then walking funny. Then all of a sudden her eyes were rolling back and she collapsed. We freaked. I started lifting her under her belly/ribs trying to pick her up as we were in a panic. And she expelled a kibble. And lived for a number of years after. I had no idea I was giving her a Heimlich. Heimlich works!!! Thanks for making this video. I will share.

Zoe, my 13 lb. Chihauhau-Terrier, just choked on a small piece of rawhide last night. I held her with her body at a slight angle, head down, and applied 2 fingers under her ribs and pushed up several times. She stopped choking, it must have gone down. So glad you had this Heimlich chart, so I saw that I had done it correctly.
    Thanks, Pat
